Budgeting can feel difficult when income changes, unexpected costs come up or there never seems to be much left after the essentials.

This practical course will help you build a clearer picture of the money you have coming in and where it needs to go.

Through realistic examples, you’ll explore how to budget using income you can rely on, plan for costs that don’t happen every month and adjust your budget when circumstances change.

The course provides general information and guidance. It does not provide personal financial advice or tell you what is right for your individual circumstances.

Estimated completion time: 15–20 minutes

This course will help you:

Learn how to use payslips, bank statements, bills and other records to build a more accurate picture of your finances.

You’ll explore why essential commitments should be based on income you can depend on, rather than overtime, bonuses or money you hope will arrive.

A realistic budget needs to include more than your regular monthly bills.

Explore regular payments, changing essential costs, flexible spending and costs that may only come around once or twice a year.

Income and costs don’t always stay the same.

You’ll work through realistic situations and explore how to adjust your budget, protect essential payments and decide what to do if the figures no longer balance.

Explore how budgeting may differ depending on whether you’re employed through PAYE, self-employed or paid through the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS).

You’ll look at the records you may need and why the amount received isn’t always the same as the amount available to spend.
