People take in information, focus and approach tasks in different ways. On a busy construction site, understanding those differences can help everyone communicate clearly and work safely.

This course introduces neurodiversity and explores practical situations you may recognise at work.

You’ll look at how things like noise, unclear instructions, competing demands and changes to a task can affect people differently, and explore simple ways to make communication and support more effective.

You do not need to diagnose anyone or know why someone is finding something difficult. The focus is on asking rather than assuming, keeping work requirements clear and finding out what may help.

Estimated completion time: 15–20 minutes

This course will help you:

Explore what neurodiversity means and learn about some common types of neurodivergence.

You’ll consider how people may experience things differently while recognising that a label or diagnosis does not tell you everything about an individual.

Someone who appears distracted, quiet or slow to start a task could be dealing with many different things.

Learn why behaviour alone doesn’t tell you the cause and why it’s better to ask what may help rather than make assumptions.

Explore how busy environments, noise, competing demands and unclear instructions can make information harder to take in.

You’ll practise ways to make tasks and priorities clearer while keeping important safety information in place.

Explore simple adjustments that may help someone carry out a task, such as clearer steps, demonstrations, written information or agreed check-ins.

The focus is on asking the person what works for them, rather than assuming what they need.

Understand how practical support and safe working go together.

You’ll consider when a simple change may help and when a concern needs to be dealt with through your site’s usual safety or workplace processes.
